Benefits and Constraints of Gap Year

The objective of this study was to illuminate students’ perceived benefits and constraints of participation in GYs, and to examine the relationship between student background and perspectives on the benefits and constraints of taking a GY. In specific, student background includes different student major, academic performances, previous international travel experience, previous interaction with international students and tourist types. A survey instrument was designed for college students and was handed out at a mid-sized university in Northeast Ohio. Results of this study indicate study field, previous international travel experience and tourist types have a significant effect on students’ perspectives on benefits of Gap Year. Also results show academic performance, interaction with international students and tourist types have a significant effect on students’ perspectives on constraints of Gap Year. Results from this study could be helpful for Gap Year Program providers to design or modify appropriate activities for participants. Also the results could help students to get a clear understanding of Gap Year.
