Abstract Details

2016, PHD, Kent State University, College of Education, Health and Human Services / School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences.
The purpose of this study was to gain understanding into possible factors that may influence faculty decisions whether to address issues of spirituality in counselor training. The goal was to acquire knowledge into the factors underlying the process by which counselor educators in non-faith-based CACREP-accredited counseling programs address spiritual issues in counselor education. The participants in the study were 23 counselor educators from 8 public state universities in the State of Ohio. They participated in Q-Methodology sorting and post sorting interviews. Three factors have emerged from this study underlying the decision-making process of counselor educators with regard to addressing spiritual issues in counselor training. Some implications for counselor educators include a strong professional consensus on including spiritual issues in pedagogy, awareness personal experiences impacting their pedagogical decision-making, and emphasis on therapeutic alliance.
