Abstract Details

2019, MA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
The goal of this thesis is to consider the role of the artist and the viewer in using experience to create and understand a national ideology through nineteenth century American landscape paintings. Through an examination of Marxist theories of ideology and intent, this study looks at landscapes of Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Church to examine: what the landscape means, how the landscape functions, and the role of the artist in presenting an experience to understand their traditional nationalist interpretations.
