APPLYING AMERICAN PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES TO FIRST-YEAR MUSIC THEORY CLASSES IN CHINESE COLLEGES

In 2001, Shanghai Music Publishing House published a series of textbooks for Chinese university-level art education, including two volumes of music theory textbooks, Jiben yueli jiaocheng. These volumes have become the most widely used texts in music majors’ first-year theory music theory core courses in most of the Chinese colleges, universities and conservatories. As an undergraduate music major at Shenyang Conservatory of Music, I also received my music theory training using these standard texts. After studying various music theory courses at Kent State University for over two semesters, I realize there are significant differences between Chinese and American music theory pedagogical approaches, materials and teaching styles. I have developed a strong preference toward American pedagogy in music theory, specially at the first-year undergraduate level. My thesis aims to define these differences, address the shortcomings in the Chinese approaches, and develop supplementary teaching materials and resources which can be used to improve the Chinese first-year theory courses. My research will serve as an initiating step toward further modernizing Chinese music theory pedagogy through implementation of recent pedagogical trends practiced in American classroom.
