Abstract
I argue for an approach to writing assessment validation that modifies current methods for the argumentative process of validation. My proposed amendment links rhetorical principles that engage in understanding arguments that has not been advanced in the writing assessment and educational measurement scholarship beyond using Toulminian argument schemes. I theorize that an explication and application f the topoi from the inferences and assumptions of validity arguments ought to yield new understandings of the invention and interpretation of validity claims for all disciplines involved in assessment.
