ADVENTURE IN THE CLASSROOM: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE EXPEDITION ACADEMY

Abstract Details

2021, MA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Anthropology.
The Adventure Model, an educational approach generated and utilized by the Outward Bound educational program, has been of interest to researchers since the program’s founding. However, the Adventure Model has rarely intersected with our public education system. The Expedition Academy, a 2-year high school program located in the Midwestern United States, serves as a unique example. By applying an ethnographic methodology and a cybernetic lens for analysis, I aimed to understand the processes necessary for the program’s success, and developed a list of suggestions, based in the Adventure Model, that can be applied to the standard classroom.
