This paper attempts to identify issues concerning social sustainability in Gamapha Public Market, Sri Lanka and speculate solutions. Social sustainability is one of the three core elements of sustainability. It is an interesting topic to discuss because of its relationship with prevailing issues regarding the state of human living such as human needs, democratic governance, diversity and equality. This paper examines the social, political and environmental context of Gampaha public market space and compares it with social sustainability objectives. The practice of sustainability differs largely between the developed and the developing countries. Cultural inheritance deeply influences human behavior, while human behavior deeply influences the environment. The context of Sri Lanka, as a developing country largely plays into this attempt to achieve social sustainability. This study also concentrates on a culturally sensitive analysis of how best to tackle the existing sustainability issues in the public market, such as the absence of public space, negative community engagement and lack of infrastructure. Achieving social sustainability is an evolutionary process, which does not begin at an origin point nor end at a utopian ideal. This paper attempts to discuss the present, and to form proposals that would facilitate the evolutionary process of achieving social sustainability in the public market space in Gampaha, Sri Lanka.
