Negation in Emma: Austen's Inversion of the Role of the Antagonist Cecily J Mullins Abstract Emma is distinct among Jane Austen's cannon for both literary and linguistic reasons. The first portion of this thesis is a literary critical analysis of Austen's characters with particular attention to how Emma departs from Austen's normal formulas for characters. Following this discussion, I have used corpus linguistic software to identify and count the negative morphemes in Austen's completed novels. This process allows for an analysis of the diction, style, structure, and free indirect discourse in Jane Austen's opus. It also uncovers stylistic patterns so that divergences from those patterns emerge. Changes in diction and style may then be placed into quantifiable terms. Having demonstrated the significant divergence from Austen's normal style that occurs in the novel Emma, I then discuss the effect of this change and hypothesize that it creates an atmosphere of anxiety and discomfort for the readers signaling Austen's inversion of the roles of her characters in Emma.
