This paper examines the translation issues tied to the novel Moins l’Infini: roman haitien by Anthony Phelps. Set in 1964, the novel deals extensively with the life-long president Francois Duvalier and his secret police, the Tonton Macoutes. Phelps’s writing shows the impact of Duvalier’s regime on every day life in Haiti as well as on a group of writers who work in the resistance against him. Some translation issues are also linked to the difference between Haitian and American culture. Conceptions of both Creole and Vodou differ between these countries. It is a primary goal of the translation, then, to bridge this gap and bring Haitian culture and history to the American reader.
