The aim of this project is to synthesize wide temperature range bent-core materials and mixtures forming an optically isotropic, polar antiferroelectric bent-core (SmCPA) liquid crystal (LC) phase with a wide temperature range, encompassing room temperature and an optimal tilt angle of θ = 45°. Schiff-base bent-core LCs, though abundant in the literature, have limited thermal and chemical stability, and for this reason, they have been avoided. This project instead focuses on phenyl benzoate design concepts to synthesize a suite of symmetric SmCPA materials.1 Mixtures of these materials will ideally extend the operating temperature range of the SmCPA phase to include room temperature and much below it. Eutectic mixtures of the synthesized LCs, in particular, were tested to decrease both clearing and melting point (or glass transition temperature) in order to provide the desired operating temperature for a potential display mode discovered and investigated earlier by Jákli et al.2
