One Poem, Two Settings; is a thesis, with an accompanying lecture recital, which explores the ways in which composers have set one poem to music in contrasting ways. Such poems are: Gretchen am Spinnrade/Meine Ruh ; by Johann von Goethe; Set by Franz Schubert and Richard Wagner Fruhlingsglaube by Johann Ludwig Uhland; Set by Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn Clair de Lune; by Paul Verlaine; Set by Gabriel Faure and Claude Debussy; Mandoline; by Paul Verlaine; Set by Gabriel Faure and Claude Debussy ;Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind; by William Shakespeare; Set by Roger Quilter and Thomas Arne It Was a Lover and His Lass; by William Shakespeare; Set by Roger Quilter and Thomas Morley For each setting, a background of the poet and composers are given, along with a synopsis of how the composers have set each poem to music differently.
