HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN COMPETITIVE AUTHORITARIAN REGIMES IN SOUTH AMERICA

Abstract Details

2016, BA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Political Science.
This thesis is a comparative case study that analyzes human rights violation in two specific cases: the Saraguro repression in Ecuador and the Chaparina repression in Bolivia. Both countries are competitive authoritarian regimes. This thesis looks to analyze whether regime interests underlie human rights violations in competitive authoritarianisms. Furthermore, this work looks to prove that the nature of a hybrid regime which is not fully democratic nor authoritarian allows for human rights violators to enjoy impunity despite the existence of international human rights law.
