My short story, “Children of Light,” illustrates the difficulties faced by families in poverty, especially concerning cyclical drug use. Though the story is centered around a young woman’s overdose and death, it shows how families affected by addiction grieve and take responsibility for their loss. I relied upon the principles of realist fiction and addiction-related research about the Northeast Ohio area to complete this work.
