The Impact of Language Barriers in a Multicultural Community: An Analysis of The North Hill Listening Project

Abstract Details

2019, BA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / School of Peace and Conflict Studies.
The North Hill Listening Project, conducted in 2018 and supported by the International Institute of Akron and Kent State University’s School of Peace and Conflict Studies, served as a method to address community health and tension in the neighborhood of North Hill in Akron, Ohio. Rural Southern Voice for Peace (RSVP) championed the use of listening projects as a tool for nonviolent change in the 1980s to address racism in North Carolina. Modeled after RSVP’s Listening Project, the North Hill Listening Project was a community-led project consisting of interviews conducted in multiple languages. These interviews gathered feedback from the residents living in Akron’s most diverse neighborhood. Over twenty-five languages are spoken in North Hill. One of the most common challenges brought up by the individuals who were interviewed were language barriers. Language barriers were also cited as a source of frustration that could lead to misunderstanding and conflict. The Listening Project provided the residents of North Hill both the space and opportunity to openly share how language barriers have impacted them. An analysis of the data from the North Hill Listening Project has found that both the host community and foreign-born community are impacted by language barriers. Both groups struggle to form social connections and access services. Both groups have also expressed ways in which they work to overcome these challenges. The North Hill Listening Project continues to provide insight on how those living within a diverse community are impacted by, respond to, and overcome language barriers.
