Abstract
This thesis is based on a survey completed by one hundred and twenty-five older adults in an effort to determine the macro-level factors that influence preventive health behaviors in osteoporosis.Osteoporosis is a major public health concern that demands prompt and effective interventions. Participants in this study were classified using stages of change for osteoporosis preventive behavior according to an algorithm adapted from the Transtheoretical Model. Bivariate statistical data analysis revealed that the likelihood of being located in the last stages of health behavior change for osteoporosis is higher for whites, women, and those with higher education and higher pre- and post-retirement income. However, no linear predictive relationship could be identified between stage of change and the macro-level factors considered in this study. Further research is necessary to obtain a clearer understanding of the stage of change concept.
