A six-month research internship was completed at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio to fulfill the requirements for a Master of Environmental Science at Miami University. This report discusses the role of the Environmental Restoration (ER) department at Battelle, my role in three projects at Battelle, and how my education played a role in my internship experience. All three projects discussed in this report were contracted to Battelle by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The first project discussed is a mercury leaching project to evaluate the leachability of mercury from a mining waste. The second study was on the oxidation and reduction of chromium in drinking water to determine the effects of chlorination on the oxidation state of chromium. The final project is a paper prepared on the evaluation of state environmental agencies on the use of risk in cleaning up brownfields in the U.S.
