I interned at the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) in Cincinnati, Ohio. ORSANCO is an interstate commission formed under the auspices of the Federal Government and eight states bordering the Ohio River. The eight states are Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The mission of ORSANCO is to monitor and maintain the water quality of the Ohio River and its tributaries.My internship focused mainly on the monitoring of the Ohio River for bacterial studies (specifically Escherichia coli or more commonly referred to as E.coli) but was not limited to other ongoing projects on the river. I was also responsible for collecting soil and water samples for analysis to estimate the level of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and Dioxins. For this project, I was part of the team that had the responsibility to perform an on-site analysis of the water samples for bacterial contamination.
