Investigating Riverbed Hydraulic Conductivity at Several Well Fields Along the Great Miami River, Southwest Ohio

Abstract Details

2008, Master of Science, Miami University, Geology and Environmental Earth Science.
The riverbed vertical hydraulic conductivity (Kv) was investigated at four sites along the Great Miami River through direct and indirect techniques and at many scales. Conventional seepage metering yielded Kv values ranging from 0.11 to 5.3 m/d. Piezo-seep and infil-seep data provided much higher values and were judged unreliable. Slug tests measured Kh at depths of 0.45 to 11.2 m and yielded values ranging from 0.284 to 94.6 m/d. Laboratory permeameter tests provided values of Kv ranging from 0.00293 to 51.2 m/d. Temperature modeling was reasonably consistent with conventional seepage metering and resulted in Kv values between 0.073 and 14.9 m/d. Kv values obtained from conventional seepage, slug tests and temperature modeling compared well to electrical resistivity surveys at three out of four study sites. Discrepancies associated with the fourth site were probably due to existence of colmation layer, a layer of a coarse sediment matrix clogged with fine sediment.
