“Because I Said So…” An Examination of Rule-Governed Behavior Within the Classroom

Abstract Details

2010, Specialist in Education, Miami University, Educational Psychology.
The current study attempted to use the theory of rule-governed behavior to examine if verbal stimuli (rules) alone can cause behavior change in a classroom setting. This study looked at whether students would stop working when they found no expected contingencies for not completing their work, and then if they would begin to work again with verbal stimuli alone and no direct contingencies. A changing criterion design was used to evaluate the impact of verbal rules on the performance of 9 elementary-school students in a summer academic program. Results were mixed with one of the two classrooms demonstrating the expected pattern indicating willingness to work solely based on verbal rules while the other classroom did not appear to be affected by the verbal rules. Implications for intrinsic motivation are also discussed.
