The Role of Old Regrowth Forests for Avian Diversity Conservation in a Southwestern Ohio Landscape

Abstract Details

2010, Master of Arts, Miami University, Geography.
The consequences of landscape fragmentation and chronic habitat loss are potentially profound for the protection of birds in the eastern deciduous forest of the Corn Belt agricultural region. Because of the absence of primary old-growth remnant stands, conservation efforts need to better understand the role of old re-growth forests for birds. This study focused on the: (1) contribution of regrowth forests to regional bird diversity; and (2) how regrowth patches differ in avian richness due to their physical, ecological, and landscape conditions. I measured forest composition and structure, and conducted avian point count surveys in nine regrowth patches embedded in the Miami University Natural Areas, southwest Ohio. The nine patches captured 94% of mature forest species for the region and differences in their habitat attributes explained the ordination of avian community types. These findings demonstrate the conservation significance of old regrowth stands for forest birds embedded in highly modified landscapes.
