A 2012 SURVEY AND ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF COMPOSTING AND ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OPTIONS FOR MIAMI UNIVERSITY

Smith, David Brian

Abstract Details

2012, Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, Environmental Sciences.
The purpose of this practicum report is to find the most cost-effective method for diverting food scraps and other organic waste materials from the landfill. Since the Miami University Sustainability Commitments and Goals, drafted in 2010, aims to divert the majority of Miami University’s solid waste from the landfill by 2017, this report aids in that goal. The research of this practicum took place from November of 2011 to July of 2012 and references a number of published research articles as well as references to what other colleges and universities in the US have done to manage organic waste materials on their campuses. With the survey of the literature and the assessment of the annual cost and benefit estimations, three methods of composting, two methods of anaerobic digestion on-campus, the contracting out of organic waste hauling and composting, and the current costs Miami pays to dispose of organic waste materials were all studied and compared. The economic assessment of all the methods for diverting organic waste materials from the landfill found that contracting out the hauling and composting of Miami University’s organic waste materials is currently the most economical approach to diverting organic waste materials from the landfill.
