Abstract Details

2014, Master of Arts, Miami University, Speech Pathology and Audiology.
The purpose of this study was to obtain perceptual data regarding the known flow rates of training cups, flow rates were manipulated through number of vent holes. 21 third grade students from a local elementary school were observed drinking water under 8 different drinking conditions. Drinking conditions were determined by volume and flow rate. Study results indicate that flow rate and starting volume have an affect on volume consumed, volume perceived, and flow rate perceived. Students did not consistently report information related to the smoothness or "consistency of flow", and preference for a particular drinking lid was not clearly established. The long-term outcome of this study is to create a novel cup that can be programmed for a child based on individual needs.
