In order to investigate the relationship between regular physical activity and older adults’ social networks, the HRS Wave 10 data were utilized with 1,907 participants aged 65 years and older. In this investigation, a multiple logistic regression analysis was used to model the relationship between physical activity, perceived social support, and perceived negative social interactions, while controlling for demographic, health-related, and socio-economic covariates. The relationship between physical activity and perceived social support was not significant. However, participants who reported high levels of negative social interactions were 23% more likely to participate in regular physical activity than those with low levels (p = 0.0117). These results could be the effect of “nagging” relationships and the desire to avoid criticism and better one’s life and health. Future research could focus on the specific relationship between the social network and its effect on physical activity through longitudinal research that utilizes context specific questions about social interactions, activity-monitoring devices, and behavior journals.
