This paper examines the efficacy of long-term use of vocal cool-down exercises following rigorous voice use. Efficacy was measured using phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and perceived phonatory effort (PPE) in six singers enrolled in an undergraduate collegiate music program. Treatment participants performed the cool-down protocol daily for six weeks. Control participants followed their usual regimen. Baseline and follow-up measures were collected. Data were characterized, as limited sample size (N=6) prohibited statistical analysis. Mean PTP and PPE group values increased for the treatment group. At the 80% level of the pitch range, mean PPE decreased in the treatment group and mean PPE increased in the control group. Increased mean PTP values in the treatment group support findings from similar studies, which call for reexamination of hypothesized values of PTP in singers during high-pitch phonation. Findings additionally support similar studies that reveal a lack of correspondence between perceived effort and PTP measures.
