Does Effort Hurt? Evidence From International Soccer

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Arts, Miami University, Economics.
Effort will only be an interesting economics topic if it is costly and if agents ration it accordingly. This paper examines whether effort levels are an important choice variable for soccer teams in international tournaments, the group-stage of which provides a near-ideal setting for identifying the impact of effort in non-dynamic settings. I first consider various simple tests of the costly-effort hypothesis using observed variables. I then employ a costly-effort structural model to infer optimizing effort levels and estimate parameters, quantifying effort’s importance compared to talent and random noise. The results of these models show a remarkable lack of evidence in favor the costly-effort hypothesis.
