Abstract
The population of older men who live alone in the United States is increasing. The literature suggests that the phenomena of living alone puts an older adult at risk for an array of health problems, but this literature is based primarily on older women. Using the 2008 and 2012 waves of the HRS, this research observed the effects of living alone on subjective well-being (SWB) of older men. In addition, this research examined the effects of duration of time spent living alone on SWB. SWB was measured using global and domain satisfaction. Race, education, marital status, age, self-rated health and income were controlled for. Cross sectional linear regression analysis revealed that living alone has a significant negative effect on both measures of SWB. Cross-wave analysis revealed that men who lived alone long-term had significantly lower domain satisfaction levels than men who lived alone short-term (less than four years); the difference in global life satisfaction and time spent alone was not significant. The finding that older men who live alone have substantively lower SWB than older men who live with others can be used to mobilize researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to address the needs of this “forgotten population.”
