Adolescent Reaction to Parental Emotion Socialization: Gender, Ethnicity, and Relation to Depression & Emotion Regulation

Abstract Details

2016, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Psychology.
Adolescence is a developmental period in which youth are especially vulnerable to depression and emotion regulation difficulties. Although the parent-adolescent relationship is transactional and parents play a critical role in shaping youth development, past research on emotion socialization (ES) is relatively limited in that it primarily focuses on the parent-driven effects and neglects adolescent-driven effects. There is also a lack of attention on the influence of parent and youth characteristics (i.e., gender, ethnicity) on the ES process. To addresses current gaps in ES literature, this study examined whether adolescents react (i.e., accept, avoid, attack) differently to mothers’ versus fathers’ ES and whether sons and daughters react differently to parental ES. This study also examined the role of ethnicity and ethnic pride in the ES process. Further, this study examined moderators of the association between adolescent reaction to parental ES (ARPES) and outcomes, and the interaction between perceptions of supportive ES and ARPES on outcomes. Participants in Study 1 were early adolescents and their primary female caretakers (n = 56, Mage = 13.7 years), and participants in Study 2 were emerging adults (n = 562, Mage = 20.1 years). Findings suggest that adolescents and emerging adults who reported more avoidant and attacking reactions also reported more symptoms of depression and emotion regulation difficulties. Also, findings suggest that parental supportive ES may only be protective when youth do not avoid or attack. Further, results suggest that gender and ethnicity are important factors to consider in better understanding ES.
