THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT AND REASONS FOR LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION AMONG ADULTS AGED 45 TO 74 YEARS

Abstract Details

2016, Master of Gerontological Studies, Miami University, Gerontology.
The retirement of an increasingly larger U.S. population has been a looming concern. To help counter the fiscal issues associated with a growing number of retirees, efforts to encourage continued productive engagement have become a central interest. Research has identified financial, personal, social and generative factors for continued labor force participation. While education is believed to have an influence on motivation for continued labor force participation, a review of published work did not find studies examining the influence of educational attainment on work motives. The study observed the relationship using data from the 2013 AARP Work and Career Study, among a nationally representative sample of labor force participants aged 45 to 74 (n = 1,290). Results indicate that those with higher education were less likely to be in the labor force for a monetary reason than adults having lower education. If not working primarily for money is associated with a quality work life, more educated workers may have a better quality of work life than less educated workers. If future investigations confirm this, policies and services may need to be directed towards lower educated workers who are primarily working for money to enhance the quality of work life.
