Abstract
An evaluation of the Chalmers DST, which measures torsional stiffness of corrugated paperboard, was conducted. The measurement is reported as a board performance indicator (BPI). Several types of B and C flute boards were evaluated. In addition to determining repeatability of measurements with respect to sample placement, spatial variation was determined. Differences between MD and CD samples were determined. Changes in torsional stiffness due to board crushing were evaluated. It was concluded that the Chalmers DST provides a repeatable measure of the MD torsional stiffness of corrugated board. The standard deviation of repeated measurements of the same individual sample at the same time is 0.1 BPI, the same as the machine precision. Standard deviations of measurements made on an individual sample over a period of days was around 0.3 BPI, but typically smaller from many samples. The coefficient of variation for similar samples was of the order of 3-7% and reflects material variability. The MD measurement of BPI showed strong sensitivity to flat crushing and results suggested that the loss of ZD-MD transverse shear stiffness was greater than the loss of thickness.
