Sustainability knowledge, which refers to understanding how to make informed decisions regarding resource use, has an important role in addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. In fact, improving one’s understanding of these issues can help us to create solutions to the challenges. Hence, it is important for universities to assess the sustainability literacy of their students and provide them with appropriate education. The goal of this study was to prepare a tool to assess sustainability literacy and culture on Miami University’s campus. To create the assessment tool, I reviewed sustainability assessment surveys administered by other universities. Eighty questions were selected from other surveys to assess the respondents’ understanding of environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability as well as respondents’ attitudes and behaviors in respect to sustainability issues. Additional questions were added to evaluate students’ awareness of Miami’s sustainability initiatives. Two pilot surveys each containing 40 questions were administered to 150 students. Respondents felt the length of the survey was acceptable, but found some of the questions confusing, long, and difficult. I recommended thirty questions for the final survey. This study provided Miami with other recommendations including the appropriate time to survey, sample size, and method of administration.
