STUDY OF SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF WATER QUALITY AND LANDSCAPE TYPES IMPACT ON STREAM WATER QUALITY IN BUTLER COUNTY, OH

Between 2014 and 2016, water was sampled monthly at 78 sites in Butler County, Ohio by a citizen's science group. This study investigated the spatial distribution of stream water quality and its relationship to land-use/land-cover (LULC). Contributing watersheds for the sites were delineated, and for each, the percentages of LULC types were quantified using geographic information systems. Temporal patterns of water- quality indicators were explored using time series and regression analyses. Variograms were used to analyze the spatial structure of variability among sites. LULC and water quality relationships were examined with correlation and regression analyses. Phosphorus, nitrate, turbidity and E. Coli contamination was widespread. Most contributing watersheds comprised agricultural and developed areas. Temporal patterns of contamination were minor with no significant trends and no apparent spatial variability structure. Phosphorus was positively correlated with open water and negatively correlated with evergreen forest. Nitrate in urban areas was lower than in agricultural areas. Nitrates were positively correlated with mixed forest and cultivated crops. E. Coli were positively correlated with developed areas and negatively correlated with open water and cultivated crops. Multiple regression models explained 29, 61 and 36% of the variability in concentrations of phosphorous, nitrates and E. Coli, respectively.
