A STUDY OF THE F3 LAYER AND IONOSPHERIC HORIZONTAL GRADIENT OBSERVED BY THE ARECIBO INCOHERENT SCATTER RADAR

The electron density, line of sight velocity, and ion and electron temperatures of the ionosphere during Jul. 10 - 12, 2015 have been measured by the Arecibo Incoherent Scatter (ISR). This thesis focuses on three aspects. The first one is to study the F3 layer, an additional layer above the traditional F2 layer. The ionosphere F-region only has a single peak at about 300 km. This thesis reports the first observation and study of the F3 layer phenomenon above Arecibo. The second aspect is to study the variations of the ionospheric horizontal gradients. The ionospheric horizontal gradients can be obtained from the gradient of the electron density and spatial difference of the peak altitude of the F2 layer. We describe several methods for analyzing the changes of horizontal gradients. A detailed discussion on the ionospheric gradient direction is presented. The third aspect is to analyze the differences and relationships between electron temperature, ion temperatures and their ratio.
