A Public Utilities Internship at the Fairfield Water Treatment Plant

Fairfield Public Utilities in Fairfield, Ohio, is responsible for the provision of water and collection of waste water for more than 42,000 water users within the city. This report covers my experience working at the Utilities as an intern, with a specific focus on responsibilities related to the water plant. During my tenure, the director of Fairfield Public Utilities would designate various tasks and assignments to me. Some assignments, such as the re-work of the water plant’s contingency plan, were critical to the water plant’s compliance with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Other assignments such as water storage tank inspections, observing a monitoring well installation project, and a complete review of a high-impact water main break were more educational and operationally motivated. This report sums up many tasks and projects I worked on while giving a transparent look into the operation of a water treatment plant, the business model for the operation, and the actual water treatment process at the Fairfield water plant.
