Abstract
It is estimated that 1.4 million people are living with HIV in Uganda, 170, 000 of whom are older adults. The prevalence rate among adults aged 50-59 is estimated at 12.7% for men and 10.3% for women. Despite these numbers, most prevention programs have been geared toward young adults and children, ignoring older adults. Older women in Uganda are at an even greater risk for HIV due to their biological, sociocultural, and economic vulnerabilities. This qualitative descriptive study explores the experiences of 10 women aged 50+ who are living with HIV in Northern Uganda. Each participated in one-on-one interviews. The themes that emerged from the data were: 1) variance in the experience of stigma 2) invisibility vs visibility 3) to tell or not tell 4) dealing with HIV through support 5) You knew but you were hiding from me 6) “I knew I had the disease.” and 7) “A will and not a bill.” The results suggest that living with HIV is a daily challenge financially and socially. Overall, this study demonstrates the need for intervention programs that can address HIV prevention, and can help support older women living with HIV in Northern Uganda.
