Addressing the Specificity of Thought-Action Fusion to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Delineating the Role of Magical Thinking, Sensitive Self Domains, and Thought Content

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, Miami University, Psychology.
Cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) posit that beliefs about intrusive thinking contribute to the disorder’s development and maintenance. One such belief, thought-action fusion (TAF), may conflate different constructs such as Magical Thinking, Sensitivity, and Thought Content. In the current study, we systematically examined these three factors to help elucidate the relationship between TAF and OCD symptoms. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three Content Areas, and engaged with an intrusive thought in that assigned Content Area. We measured participants’ trait levels of Sensitivity and Magical Thinking. It was hypothesized that participants who engaged with a thought involving morality-related content would experience relatively heightened OCD symptoms, but only when they had higher levels of Sensitivity and Magical Thinking. We expected that all other conditions, including intrusive thoughts varying in perceived immorality and importance, would be associated with heightened distress but relatively lower OCD symptoms. We found partial support for our hypotheses, with morality-related content playing a more prominent role in OCD-relevant outcomes, and Magical Thinking being implicated in general distress outcomes (e.g., worry). These findings suggest that the link between TAF and OCD symptoms may depend on the elements of TAF that are present for an individual.
