TIME-RESOLVED LASER SPECTROSCOPY TO MEASURE LIFETIME OF THE 6sSg(v,J) STATE IN DIATOMIC SODIUM MOLECULE

Rovibrationally resolved radiative lifetime measurements of the various levels in the Na2 6sSg(3s+5s) electronic state have been done using a time-resolved spectroscopic technique. From the measurements collisional cross sections were also extracted. The sodium molecules are produced in a heatpipe oven and excited to the 6sSg(v=6,J=31) and 6sSg(v=8, J=31) states using the XsSg -- AsSu -- 6sSg transition by two home-built dye lasers pumped by a pulse Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. Molecular fluorescence is measured from the final states to determine lifetimes employing a photon counting technique. We also measured the lifetime of the AsSu(34,24) state and studied the strong pathways of the 6sSg(40,23) and 6sSg(35,23) states. Measurements of these parameters not only provides a powerful test for theoretical approaches but also helps to understand the inner working of the molecule.
