The moderating effects of athletic identity and coping on post-injury alcohol use in intercollegiate athletes

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science, Miami University, Exercise and Health Studies.
The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the impact of injury severity on post-injury drinking behavior as moderated by the constructs of coping skills, emotion-focused coping styles, and athletic identity. One hundred fifty-seven (38 injured) NCAA and club athletes participated in this study. Participants completed a battery of surveys that measured their injury type/severity, coping skills, coping styles, athletic identity, volume of alcohol consumption, and motives for alcohol consumption. Results found that the presence of an injury alone, and its corresponding severity, did not significantly impact the volume of alcohol that an athlete consumes, or them using alcohol as a coping mechanism. However, adherence to emotion-focused coping styles was significantly related to an athlete using alcohol to cope with negative emotions during their injured period. The use of denial coping mechanisms was found to moderate the relationship between injury severity and using alcohol to cope with adverse emotions. Furthermore, those with a high ability to cope with adverse situations used alcohol as a coping mechanism less during their injured period. Results of this study suggest that it is important to monitor the drinking behavior of injured athletes who rely on emotion-focused coping styles or have low coping skills.
