Measuring Stakeholder Perceptions: A Review of Social Validity Measures in Speech Pathology Research

Rae, Kirsty Margaret

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Arts, Miami University, Speech Pathology and Audiology.
Intervention research in speech-language pathology is growing, however there remains a gap between research and clinical practice. To promote evidence-based practice, implementation science incorporates stakeholder input during the development and evaluation of treatments. Stakeholder input is measured via social validity, which probes end-users' satisfaction and acceptability of a treatment. This systematic review explores the frequency of social validity measures across the speech-language pathology treatment literature from ASHA journals from 2017-2019. In total, 20 out of the 93 treatment studies measured social validity, all using the subjective evaluation approach. The most common method of measurement was through a rating scale. We urge researchers and journal editors to include social validity measures in treatment literature as we promote implementation science and the involvement of stakeholders during the development of evidence-based practices.
