Purpose of the Study. Blackouts are a common high-risk outcome of heavy episodic drinking among college students. Social Norms Theory is considered a reliable approach to examine alcohol consumption on college campuses. Difficulty in emotion regulation is the recent trend and a fundamental factor linked with alcohol use. However, little is known on the relationship between social norms perception, difficulty in emotion regulation, and blacking out in a college population. Therefore, this paper explores: 1) The relationship between college students' social norm perception, alcohol use and alcohol-induced blackout; 2) The relationship between college students' difficulty in emotion regulation, alcohol use and alcohol-induced blackout; 3) Whether injunctive norms have a moderating effect on the relationship between descriptive norms perception, alcohol use, and alcohol-induced blackout; 4) Whether difficulty in emotion regulation has a moderating effect on the relationship between social norms perception, alcohol use, and alcohol-induced blackout. Design and Methods. The researcher collected data in one public Midwest university from 2017 fall to 2019 using random cluster sampling after Institutional Review Board approval. The students who completed an online survey were entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card or issued extra credits in accordance with the preference of the course instructors. The participants were undergraduate college students on three campuses of the university. A total of 542 undergraduate college students participated in the survey. A majority of the participants identified as Caucasian, female, and junior/senior students. The average age of the participants was 21. Results. Social norms predicted both alcohol use and alcohol-induced blackouts. Emotion dysregulation only predicted blackouts but not alcohol use. In addition, injunctive norms moderated the relation between descriptive norms and alcohol use but not alcohol-induced blackouts. Furthermore, emotion dysregulation moderated the relation between social norms perception and alcohol use. The intertwined relationship between social norms and emotion dysregulation provided the evidence for the future interventions targeting college population.
