Literacy Beliefs and Practices of Anguillian Parents of Kindergarten Children

Abstract Details

2021, Master of Arts, Miami University, Speech Pathology and Audiology.
The purpose of this study is to examine the home literacy practices that kindergartners in Anguilla experience and discover caregiver attitudes towards the importance of literacy involvement in the home. Although studies involving the development of literacy have been performed in other Caribbean islands (Hewitt-Bradshaw, n.d.; Roopnarine & Dede Yildirim, 2019; Roopnarine & Yildirim, 2018; Stone et al., 2020; Warrican et al., 2008), early literacy practices typical in the British territory of Anguilla’s have not yet been formally investigated. A total of 16 parents of kindergartners completed an anonymous online survey distributed through the public school system on the island. The survey included questions on demographics, home literacy environment (books, frequency and characteristics of shared book reading) and caregiver attitudes towards reading. Based on survey results, although all respondents highly valued their child’s ability to read, parents indicated a range of home literacy practices. These practices included the age that they began to read to their child, the frequency of shared book reading time, and number of books in the home.
