Abstract Details

2021, Master of Fine Arts, Miami University, English.
Fill is a satirical speculative-fiction novel that examines the relationship between environmental and psychological decomposition within late-stage capitalism, epitomized by our consumer waste system. Through the narrating perspective of a young selfproclaimed (and occasionally self-deluded) ecowarrior working in advertising and grieving the slow death of her grandmother to cancer, this novel examines performative, greenwashed propaganda, environmental damage via the cradle-to-grave trash system, and the endless cycle of consumerism that numbs minds via temporary, disposable satisfaction. Fill also illuminates the dangerous stories we tell ourselves—even “sell” ourselves—to preserve our sanity in the midst of a confusing, contradictory existence of constant consumption, and examines the consequences of (and our own complicity in) believing those fictions
