Development and Characterization of a Ceramic Coating for Carbon-Epoxy Composite Materials

This work assesses the effect of a ceramic protective coating added to carbon-epoxy composite. Coated samples of varying amounts of nanospring thickness and ceramic slurry were tested and compared to a control sample of untreated carbon-epoxy composites. All composites received plasma and amine treatment and were fabricated via vacuum bagging. The strength and elastic modulus of the coated samples did not increase when compared to untreated samples. However, mechanical testing and SEM imaging revealed that although the coated samples were brought to failure, they did not present a complete failure. Thermal resistance was measured through torch testing and temperature measurements revealed the coating did not decrease the heat transfer rate. However, mass measurements indicated the coating provided samples with a fire-retardant layer that protects the composite from mass loss from burning. An EDS analysis showed the coating was not fully removed during burning. These findings suggest the ceramic coating protects the composites from complete catastrophic failure and thermal degradation.
