Until the Cold Was Made Normal

Abstract Details

2022, Master of Fine Arts, Miami University, English.
These poems locate violence temporally and spatially to show ways that violence continues beyond its initial spectacle. The thesis begins with personal poems that relate to violent subject matter followed by poems about violent global events, many of them unfamiliar to most American readers. The second section consists of persona poems that are influenced by the Japanese, Chinese and Korean genre of poems known as jisei, poems written right before the death of the writer. The immediacy and brevity of this form marks a contrast from the first section’s longer, more narrative works. The final section is a long poem titled “Lingua Franca” that operates with poetic fragments and discusses violence within the context of language (especially the death of languages), economics, religion, and myth. The Tower of Babel is its central image.
