Abstract
Gandhi’s portrayal through his novels and critiques of modern civilization and lack of “science” containing material (with more focus on his political philosophy) often misrepresents him as being anti-science. Instead, Gandhi’s life defined a space for an alternative science for civil society. Gandhi had strong views on science in general, and specifically health and medicine, which prove him to far from anti-science. This thesis studies the views Gandhi had on science, and specifically health and medicine, through analyzing his novels and critiques. Outside sources that have also looked into Gandhi’s views on health were also used. The link between Gandhi’s preventative and curative aspects of Gandhi’s health care system was illustrated through taking all of the material found on health and breaking it down into these two components, which then were related to his concept of self-rule. It was concluded that Gandhi was not anti-science, but rather a scientist by its very definition. Because Gandhi did not find what he considered to be an appropriate system of health and medicine, he created his own health system that included both preventative and curative measures and both were a way to live life, not an instantaneous remedy. Gandhi’s opinion on health focused on the self-rule aspect of his philosophy, in that all measures of health should come from India and should be attainable by all. His health care system addressed the issues of diet, exercise, and medicine, and it was through various experiments he conducted on himself and in his ashrams as well as through his own experiences through reading books and hearing stories that he came to his conclusions.
