An Econometric Investigation of the Brazilian Ethanol Exports: The Role of Brazilian Sugar Export Prices and World Oil Prices

For more than thirty years, Brazil has invested in the ethanol sector, especially through the so-called PNA. Today, Brazil is one of the worlds largest producers and exporters of ethanol; and it is estimated that the Brazilian ethanol production is going to reach new record levels. However, economic theories suggest that two other important sectors, sugar and oil, play an important role in the ethanol market. Therefore, this thesis aims to test the interrelationship among these sectors, using the following variables: ethanol export prices, sugar export prices and world oil prices. Econometric models, using the difference of each variable, proved that the theory is partially correct. The ethanol export price seems to be affected by the world oil price and the sugar export price together. However, each of those variables alone do not significantly affect it. In addition, the sugar export price seems to be affected by either the ethanol export price alone or together with the oil price. Not surprisingly, the world oil price is affected by neither variable.
