Abstract Details

2009, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Food and Nutrition (Health and Human Services).
The effect of fresh produce delivery on food security (FS) and fruit/vegetable intakes and behaviors of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-eligible, rural Appalachian Ohio women with >1 child <18 years of age were examined using a pre/post pilot study. The intervention group (n=30, 90.0% retention rate [RR]) received $60.00 of home-delivered produce for 4 weeks, and control group (n=31, 93.9% RR) received $60.00 food/fuel gift cards. After 4 weeks, there was a significant improvement in household (U=303.5, p =.018), adult (U=315.0, p=.029), and child (U=336.0, p =.049) FS status among intervention group participants compared to control group participants. Produce intakes and behaviors did not differ between groups after the intervention (p>.05). Only amount of fruit eaten (p=.001) at onset was related to adult FS status at the onset of the study; however, at the end of the study, adult FS was not significantly related to change in any parameter. The short duration and lack of nutrition education may have contributed to these findings. Future studies should incorporate ongoing nutrition education during a study spanning a longer time period.
