An evaluation of the performance of three experimental sections on Interstate 86 in New York State is presented. The sections were built to evaluate the effectiveness of different fracturing methods for rehabilitating rigid pavements and provide recommendations for the design of unbonded concrete overlays. The sections consist of an unbounded jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) overlay over a cracked and seated (C&S), rubblized or untreated jointed reinforced concrete pavement (JRCP). Results show that the environmental response is more critical than the dynamic response to the falling weight deflectometer test (FWD). Additionally, results suggest that a JPCP overlay over untreated JRCP would exhibit a more severe environmental response compared to the same overlay over C&S or rubblized JRCP. Higher tensile change in strains generally occurred at the top of the slab due to positive temperature gradients. Composite behavior between the overlay and the bond-breaker interlayer was observed in all sections. The C&S section experienced a more severe dynamic response to the FWD tests and exhibited loss of support but provided better load transfer efficiencies (LTE) than the other sections. The rubblized section showed fair LTE values and provided better support than the other two sections. The untreated section showed the lowest LTE values. The study suggests that top-down cracking could be a main distress mechanism of failure. Comprehending the behavior of the experimental sections would help on the calibration of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design-Based catalogue of rigid pavements for the state of New York.
