Damaging floods in the 1960's led the Army Corps of Engineers to channelize nine kilometers of the Hocking River in Athens, Ohio in 1971. The river was realigned and its conveyance made 930 cumecs. Hydraulic modeling was performed to determine its 2010 conveyance and calibrated with detailed flood observations from other studies. Previously measured stages and discharges yield roughness values nearly twice as large as those used in previous models, indicating a large change in channel behavior or morphology. Detailed modeling eliminated sediment accumulation as the problem, but roughness values are affected by backflooding. The models yield a current conveyance of ~430 cumecs, far less than its purported 1971 value, and backflooding is observed behind the Route 50 Bridge and bypass constructed at the downstream end of the artificial channel. The Ohio Department of Transportation built this bridge, which acts as a dam, partially negating the flood mitigation project.
