Deficits in social functioning can occur for a variety of reasons including the presence of mental health difficulties, developmental delays, cognitive deficits, or lack of exposure to social opportunities. Poor social functioning has been linked to negative outcomes such as academic difficulties, school drop-out, substance use, mental health problems, and poor adjustment into adulthood. The relationship between impaired social functioning and negative outcomes is especially pronounced in adolescence. However, this relationship is not fully understood and research has been hindered by the limited number of valid and appropriate measures of social functioning made specifically for adolescents. The present study reviews the development of the Social Functioning Rating Scale for Adolescents (SFRS-A) parent form. Five domains were identified through a systematic review of the literature as critical to adolescent social functioning. Items were developed and reviewed by experts in the field. The 160 items Likert-type scale was administered to a large sample of parents with adolescent children. Results from Exploratory Factor Analysis reduced the measure to 88 items and revealed a six factor solution (Goal Setting and Academic Attainment, External Self-Regulation, Child Self-Concept, Internal Self-Regulation, Independence, and Communication/Behavior toward Family). Results indicated adequate reliability and preliminary criterion related validity. The SFRS-A parent form shows promise and warrants further investigation in order to address the dearth of measurement options for adolescent social functioning.
