Optimization and Analysis of a Slow-Release Permanganate Gel for Dilute DNAPL Plume Remediation in Groundwater

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Geological Sciences (Arts and Sciences).
Dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are a major source of groundwater pollution that can cause disease or cancer. This study was aimed at characterizing gelation, spreading, and release dynamics of a slow-release permanganate gel (SRP-G) for use as a potential low-cost treatment of large, dilute DNAPL plumes in groundwater. It was hypothesized that (I) if a SRP-G solution contained a maximum amount of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) with a colloidal silica mixture of high-silica concentration the solution would provide a stronger gel and higher oxidant concentrations in porous media with flowing water and (II) if the initial temperature of the solution was moderately changed within 10-20°C of its original temperature, its initial viscosity would decrease and allow for low-pressure injection. Batch tests were employed to gain an understanding of temperature effects on SRP-G solutions containing an ideal mixture of 50/50, 40 wt.% ¿ 50 wt.% colloidal silica. Once temperature effects were understood, a small flow-tank test was conducted to monitor the migration and release of MnO4¿ . It was found that cooling the SRP-G solution to 4°C allowed the initial viscosity to remain low (<22 dPas) for extended periods of time (~70-100 min). The flow tank test showed that an optimized SRP-G solution containing 28 g/L of KMnO4 had a release duration up to 14.1 d, with MnO4¿ concentrations remaining above 850 µg/d for 10.4 d.
